Teaching History

Shahzia Sikander has led numerous teaching seminars over the past 20 years. She has worked with graduate students internationally. The importance of teaching and engaging with the next generation of young artists and students is critical in its capacity to open up pathways for dialogue and discussion. Her contributions to the on-going dialogue about the local/global and cultural implications of artistic practice began in the 1990s with her role as a teacher in Pakistan and the US. She taught miniature painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore in 1992 and the winter session on miniature painting at Rhode Island School of Design in 1994. While in residency at the Glassel School of Art, Houston in 1995-97, Sikander taught classes at the school. She has done extended visits and worked with graduate students at Columbia University and Brooklyn College.

Sikander has conducted teaching seminars and workshops at World Economic Forum Davos, Duke University, Nasher Museum, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Anderson Ranch, Skowhegan, National College of Arts Lahore, American University Rome, Fukuoka Art Museum Japan, MCA Sydney, Tokyo University of the Arts, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Oberlin College, Brown University, Yale University, Curatorial Center at Bard University, Princeton University, Cooper Union, New York University, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum, Asia Society, New York, Museum of Art and Design, New York, School of Visual Arts, New York, New School, New York, Jewish Museum, New York, Parsons, Pratt Institute, 92nd Street Y New York, New York Studio School, CUNY Queens College, Purchase College, SUNY New Palz, CUNY City College, Montclair State University, Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, Moore College of Art and Design, Fabric Workshop Museum, Temple University, Muhlenberg College, UCLA, University of San Diego, UC San Jose, UC Irvine, Hammer Museum, Otis College of Art and Design, San Diego Museum of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Mills College of Art, Contemporary Jewish Museum San Francisco, SFMoMA, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, University of Hawaii, Seattle Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Colorado Boulder, Cleveland Art Institute, Cleveland State University, Ohio State University Columbus, University of Akron, Washington University Saint Louis, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Brigham Young University, Boston University, School of the Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design, Brandeis University, Bowdoin College, Vermont College of Fine Arts, University of Connecticut, Philip Johnson Glass House, Wellesley College, Dartmouth College, Smith College, Maryland Art Institute, Corcoran College of Art and Design, Freer Sackler Smithsonian, Virginia Commonwealth University, Kentucky School of Art, Louisiana State University, University of Houston, University of Texas Austin, Glassel School of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
